The Kenney Companies had its beginning in 1987 when owner Stephen
F. Kenney retired from an eight-year NFL career due to a back
injury. After his retirement Steve began his real estate career
by developing single family residential subdivisions in the North
Raleigh portion of Wake County. Kenney’s first project,
River Oaks on Falls of Neuse Road, began in the spring of 1988
and was an instant success, being named the Outstanding New Residential
Community in Wake County by the Raleigh-Wake Homebuilders Association.
Kenney followed River Oaks with other single family neighborhoods
and in 1992 was once again honored, this time as the Triangle
Developer of the Year.
In the mid 1990’s, while still developing
single family neighborhoods, Steve began the transition into
the development and ownership of apartment communities. In 1998
Kenney’s
company was named the Outstanding Small Business in the Raleigh
Wake County region. By 2001 Steve had sold the last of his remaining
single family lots and was devoting 100% of his time to the multi-family industry, and created a new property management company, Kenney Realty Services. Since that time Kenney Realty Services and its staff have since garnered numerous awards and honors including being twice named as one of the Triangle Business Journal’s Best Places to Work.
In
the spring of 2003 Steve joined with longtime friend and college
teammate, Joe Bostic, to form Kenney Construction, Inc. With
the addition of Kenney Construction the organization is now vertically
integrated, allowing it to control the entire process of developing,
building, owning, and operating its apartment communities. The
company moved into the field of student housing in the fall of
2003, building projects to serve Western Carolina University
in Cullowhee, NC and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke
in Pembroke, NC. Since that time the company has expanded its
footprint to include South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia.
From the process of selecting appropriate sites, to constructing
the apartment buildings, to operating and managing those facilities,
The Kenney Companies has positioned itself for continued growth
in its quest to be the number one full service multi-family company
in the Southeastern United States.
